It’s Winter Break! So..What Now?

Congratulations, Vikings! You’ve survived the fall semester, and have now entered into the wonderful world of Winter Break where homework and classes do not exist for the next few weeks.

Many of us will be heading home for break to spend time with family and catch up with hometown friends. And the rest of us will be just enjoying the mini vacation from the commute to campus (hooray for saving gas!).

As exciting as Winter Break may be because of the long hours of sleep we all well deserved, it’s important to take full advantage of this break from college life.  Because after all, there’s nothing more embarrassing than telling friends that you spent your entire Winter Break in front of the computer screen and in your pajamas.

Have a Mini Getaway

If you’re fortunate enough to go away this Winter Break to either a tropical paradise, a winter wonderland, or even just a different city, do it and enjoy! It’s the perfect chance to just sit back and relax, especially after a stressful semester.

Work It Out

Let’s face it. Everyone’s New Year’s resolution is to get in shape for 2014. There’s no denying it and there’s especially no harm in doing so.  Spend your break getting into that fitness routine to improve your health and, hey, those “Wow you look incredible! Have you been working out?” compliments are always a plus.

Make It Rain..Money

College is expensive. If you had a part-time position at a retail store or restaurant, definitely see if they could use some extra help while you’re on break. Having extra cash in your pocket is always fabulous.

Internships. Internships. Internships.

A lot of internships look for new interns in the summer, and the bonus is that you have a better chance of finding a paid one in the summer as well. Many deadlines for applying for internships are in the beginning of the  Spring semester. Do some research now to prepare for when it comes time to apply. You’ll never know what you’ll find!

Get Ahead of the Game

If you’re a Senior like me, get ahead of the game and get some work done over break. Once you’ve had your time to relax and be lazy for a few days (trust me, you’ve earned it!), take time to also be productive and spend a few hours getting your finances sorted for the coming semester, look into the syllabus (if available) for your new courses, and also look into jobs within your field. There’s no harm in doing research beforehand. When it comes time to apply after graduation, you’ll be happy you did your research.

Be Lazy

As mentioned before, you survived the fall semester and now it’s time to just…relax. Take a few days off during break to have some “you time” and just do whatever you want.  Whether it’s spending time with friends or family, going shopping, or just doing nothing, do it.

im-gonna-be-productive-this-winter-breakI highly encourage everyone to have a lazy day. It’s your Winter Break. Enjoy it!
